Five Ways to Fulfill the Cultural Commission

Much has been written and said about the Cultural Mandate and the Great Commission. I, myself, wrote my doctoral dissertation on the connection between the two—how they together (re)iterate God’s mission in the world and His invitation for us to join in.
This conflation of commands is now aptly referred to as the “Cultural Commission.” It’s our co-mission with God to join Him in redeeming and restoring this world to be what God originally intended—to conform people to be like Jesus and to transform culture to be like heaven.
THAT we ought to fulfill this cultural commission is obvious, but HOW we do it is much less so. Very little has been said and written about that. Therefore, I want to offer FIVE actions that we can take to practically fulfill the Cultural Commission.
First, we can fulfill the Cultural Commission by rejecting the notion of a “secular-sacred divide.” We have been indoctrinated by the prevailing culture and even by our churches to adopt the dualistic us versus them mindset, which denies Jesus’ lordship over ALL domains of society.
Second, we can fulfill the Cultural Commission by embracing a “leaven the loaf” view of the kingdom. Jesus compared the kingdom of God to yeast that leavens the ENTIRE loaf of bread. We are the leaven, and the loaf is the world.
Third, we can fulfill the Cultural Commission by infiltrating the “social sources” of our society. The social sources of society that shape culture are academics, art, entertainment, education, business, media, and politics. Christians MUST invade these strategic social centers.
Fourth, we can fulfill the Cultural Commission by not viewing culture as enemy territory but as “social no man’s land.” Our culture is not pervasively lost and hopelessly abandoned. It’s disputed territory for us to RECLAIM, and it is fair game.
Fifth, we can fulfill the Cultural Commission by choosing “kingdom partiality” over “cultural neutrality.” Jesus was totally partial about his LORDSHIP over all creation and the extent of God’s kingdom, and we should be too. This world belongs to God, and we only serve Him.
