Just Say No to Neutrality

Quoting Dante, President John F Kennedy declared that “The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who in period of moral crisis maintain their neutrality.”
Neutrality is no good. Why? Because neutrality doesn’t move the needle. It changes nothing, and it does nothing. It just makes it easier to sit on the sidelines and watch the world burn.
Many Christians, and churches for that matter, consider themselves “neutral” when it comes to so called hot-button political issues. The problem is that most of these “political” issues were biblical, moral issues long before they ever became politicized.
As such, we cannot maintain a neutral posture on any cultural issue that has moral or ethical implications for society. It is fundamentally unloving and irresponsible to ignore or take no position on matters of moral consequence.
Unfortunately, many professing Christians and even pastors play the neutral card to avoid all conflict and placate any division in their churches, but that kind moral impartiality further isolates the church and condemns culture.
Neutrality is the enemy of evangelism. It insulates the church and alienates culture. Staying silent on moral issues only accelerates complacency among Christians and moral confusion in society.
To be blunt, knowing the truth and refusing to speak up about it is simply unchristian. It betrays the commands of Scripture, undermines the legacy of our forebears, and compromises our generational responsibility to our posterity.
The Bible is clear about God’s decree on abortion, homosexuality, transgenderism, fornication, and pornography, among other moral issues, and it makes no apologies and provides no accommodations for them in the church or in society.
In other words, God’s Word does not distinguish between one biblical truth for Christians and another for culture. Rather, it emphasizes the lordship of Christ over ALL things, and Jesus is either lord OF all or not lord AT all.
For this reason, Christians and their churches have the biblical responsibility to influence culture with biblical truth on moral issues that impact our society. It’s high time for pastors, churches, and their congregations to activate and engage.
