The Cultural Tipping Point

How culture changes
According to researchers at the Social Cognitive Networks Academic Research Center (SCNARC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, when just 10% of the population holds an unshakable belief, that belief will be adopted by the rest of society. They call this societal consensus the "tipping point," and it applies to ideas, to trends, and to beliefs and behaviors. A tipping point is a watershed moment when an idea, a trend, or a social belief or behavior crosses a threshold that tips a balance and creates widespread cultural change.
According to the director, “When the number of committed opinion holders is below 10%, there is no visible progress in the spread of ideas. However, once that number grows above 10%, the idea spreads like flame.”
In other words, to create societal change in the beliefs and behaviors of an entire culture, you need only convince ten percent of those people in order to influence all the rest. This makes widespread cultural change possible.
So, why does this matter? It matters because it explains how prevalent cultural change occurs. It also explains why cultural views have shifted so quickly and so dramatically in the past few decades.
It’s patently obvious that American views on social issues like sex, gender, and marriage, have shifted rapidly and dramatically in the last 30 years, especially about homosexuality, transgenderism, and gay marriage.
What used to be socially unacceptable or even culturally invisible is now not only widely accepted but also even broadly celebrated. Even in the church, there has been a shocking increase of support among Christians.
This is the bad news. According to cultural experts, the tipping point for gay marriage occurred in 2011 and the tipping point for transgenderism happened in 2014. Those two years proved as pivotal moments when cultural acceptance exploded.
Now the good news. If widespread cultural change can happen that fast and that much when it hits a tipping point, then we can also reverse the course of events in our society in the same way.
That is, we can influence and alter the cultural landscape here in America toward biblical traditional views of sex, gender, and marriage, and we will only need to convince ten percent of the population to do it!
