Trump Admin Warns UN Against Using COVID-19 To Promote Pro-Choice Agenda

At the most recent World Health Assembly meeting, the Trump administration disassociated itself from a number of paragraphs regarding sexual and reproductive health written into the Assembly’s COVID-19 Response Resolution, stating, “We champion access to high-quality health care for women and girls across the lifespan. However, we do not accept references to ‘sexual and reproductive health,’ or other language that suggests or explicitly states that access to abortion is included in the provision of population and individual level health services."

These comments came on the heels of a letter sent to the UN secretary-general from the acting administrator for the US Agency for International Development (USAID), John Barsa, warning the UN against using the coronavirus pandemic "as an opportunity to advance access to abortion as an 'essential service.'" He accussed the UN of placing access to sexual and reproductive health services on the same level of importance as “food insecurity, essential health care, malnutrition, shelter, and sanitation."

In his letter, Barsa praised the president's anti-abortion push, saying that the president "has made clear that we will never tire of defending innocent life" and warned the UN against intimidating member states that are committed to the right to life.

As of last Friday, the Trump Administration announced the termination of the US’ relationship with WHO for its failure to make “requested and greatly needed” reforms.
