On Monday, on behalf of pro-life leaders, including FACT, pro-life advocacy organization Susan B. Anthony List sent a letter to FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn urging him to stop the illegal internet sales of at-home medical abortion drugs manufactured overseas that do not comply with the FDA’s Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS).

The abortion drug Mifeprex or generic mifepristone is illegal to sell in pharmacies and online because it can cause serious complications for pregnant women, yet the websites AidAccess and Rablon continue to sell and distribute it.

SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser said this must stop. “While the abortion industry and its allies promote these drugs as the safe, easy, near painless way to have an abortion, the truth is that women have experienced intense pain, severe and heavy bleeding, and even death as a result of chemically-induced abortions,” she said.

With telemedicine at-home abortions on the rise due to the coronavirus, restrictions on dangerous drugs are even more necessary to protect vulnerable women from potentially unscrupulous abortion activists and businesses.

“We appreciate that FDA is seriously defending the necessary safeguards contained in the Mifeprex REMS in litigation,” the concluding paragraph of the letter said. “These safeguards are meaningless, however, if opportunistic entities can sell abortion-inducing drugs over the internet with impunity. We urge the FDA to act now to stop this predatory and dangerous practice.”
