Trump Appointee Merritt Corrigan Fired from USAID Over Anti-LGBTQ Tweets

On Monday, Merritt Corrigan, a Trump administration appointee whose anti-L.G.B.T.Q. comments had previously spurred calls for her removal as Deputy White House liaison, left the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), according to an agency spokeswoman.

In July, 20 House Democrats, led by New York Representative Eliot L. Engel, wrote a letter to USAID asking for Ms. Corrigan’s removal. “Her record of public remarks, including disparaging L.G.B.T.Q. people and those who express support for them, women in positions of leadership and immigrants, is appalling, and has no place in a federal agency,” the lawmakers wrote.

Corrigan took to Twitter on Monday to denounce the reporters who uncovered the social media posts, stating that she had been targeted by Democrats on Capitol Hill and the news media because of her Christian faith. She also announced a press conference to discuss the “rampant anti-Christian sentiment at USAID.”

“For too long, I’ve remained silent as the media has attacked me for my Christian beliefs, which are shared by the majority of Americans,” she said, tweeting that “gay marriage isn’t marriage” and “men aren’t women.”
